The experience “The Scream of Medusa,” taking place in the 1500-year-old Basilica Cistern, one of Istanbul’s most magnificent structures, will meet art enthusiasts on November 17th.
Hosted by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Cultural Inc., “The Scream of Medusa” is a 45-minute immersive performance experience led by the pioneering designer of “Wearable Art,” Başak Cankeş, which involves contact with water in the cistern.
The story of Medusa is reinterpreted in the famous Yerebatan Cistern, known for its Medusa heads, which attract visitors from all over the world.
The central character of this performance, which is viewed by wandering between stations spread throughout the cistern’s waters, is Medusa, who was unjustly transformed into a snake-headed creature by Athena in mythology, and she will rediscover her inner strength. The script for each performance is designed with a different ending, and “The Scream of Medusa” will meet the audience with alternative scenarios.
An experienced team of artists who have worked on numerous theatrical fashion performances in the past is coming together under the direction of Başak Cankeş.
Audiences will be welcomed in groups of up to 65 people in the darkness of the cistern for this 45-minute performance. The event will take place on the evenings of November 17, 20, 21, 22, and 23 with a capacity of 65 people in two separate sessions at 20:15 and 21:45. Mobile phones will be entirely unusable during the event, and spectators will not be able to take pictures.
